“Talking About Pop Music:

An A to Z of Hit Artists”

PRESS RELEASE

Midlands journalist charts his own “Top of the pops”as he publishes his first book

Talking About Pop Music: An A to Z of Hit Artists” by James Iles is out now!

MIDLANDS music writer and journalist James Iles is the author of “Talking About Pop Music: An A to Z of Hit Artists” – an alphabetical journey through his favourite bands and solo artists, charting some of the most successful recording stars in the history of pop.

Pop music has the power to stir emotions, be they happy or sad, melancholy or ecstasy. Songs can capture a moment in time – they are the soundtrack to our memories.

However, with the pause button on gigs, festivals and recording sessions due to the pandemic, music lovers have been missing their pop fix.

James Iles, a journalist and writer for more than 20 years, used this hiatus to reflect on his favourite hit artists and put them in an alphabetical hall of fame that features: Abba, Coldplay, David Bowie, Genesis, The Jam, Paul McCartney, Pet Shop Boys, Queen, The Killers, Led Zeppelin and many more.

James, who is chief sub-editor of a newspaper group, commented: “Like so many people, the pandemic meant gigs and festivals I had tickets for were cancelled. Many artists also put recording sessions and albums releases on hold, which brought home how much we love pop music and appreciate the positive impact it has on our lives.

“I quickly realised my “A to Z of Hit Artists” series, that had started out as an idea for a regular feature for the papers, could become so much more, so I always had this book in mind.

“Pop music is a real passion of mine, I am always talking about bands as well as listening to them, and I have always wanted to talk about it in more depth, so I am thrilled to get the chance to share my zeal for this topic in my debut book.

“I love a wide variety of artists (but do have a few particular favourites!) and I think that is reflected in “Talking About Pop Music” – so there’s hopefully a chapter of interest for everyone!”

Featuring some reproductions of Kirk Whitehouse’s impressive Smashed Hits / Broken Vinyl artworks to accompany the chapters, James’ personal alphabetical adventure is jam-packed with musical insight and detail, interesting facts and personal memories.

Each chapter is an expanded and definitive version of the series of features that have been seen in local newspapers this year, and there’s even a playlist for each featured artist.

A great read and absolutely spot on, its like youve taken me on a musical journey, Simon Glyn Richards on Facebook.

CAN YOU DIG IT? JOURNALIST JAMES PUBLISHES FIRST GARDENING BOOK

“Finding The Plot: 12 months of garden discovery”

by James Iles is out now!

GARDENING journalist James Iles has released a new book called “Finding The Plot: 12 months of garden discovery” which brings together the best of his horticultural tips and ideas into one handy guide.

James hopes to get green-fingered folk out and about in their outdoor space all-year round in this full-colour title.

Aimed at those people who have perhaps recently discovered the space beyond the back door of their home during lockdown, or those who have rekindled their love of the garden in this year of Covid-19, James’ useful book will keep people’s minds and bodies active with some handy projects and useful tasks.

Boasting full colour pictures taken in gardens James has maintained and designed over the past couple of decades, each chapter has a theme relevant to the time of year and a handy list of important jobs to carry out for that month.

James has been the gardening editor of a regional newspaper group for more than a decade now, as well as writing garden features for other publications, and previously ran his own maintenance and design horticultural business.

He hopes his first gardening book will help people find sanctuary in their outdoor space in what has been a very worrying time in the world.

“More people than ever are discovering the joys of getting to grips with their gardens, often as a way to boost mental health,” said James.

“Escaping to the garden is sometimes our only route away from the stresses and strains of the world, such as worrying about our family, friends and finances.

“’Finding The Plot’ offers an all-year round guide to gardening that will hopefully help people feel much healthier and happier too.”

‘Finding The Plot’ comes hot on the heels of James’ debut book, released in October, called ‘Talking About Pop Music: An A to Z of Hit Artists’.
